If you run marketing at a legal tech startup, you have probably been told to invest in earned media — and also in Reddit, YouTube, G2 reviews, podcast appearances, conference content, and roughly fifteen other channels. The advice is correct in the abstract and useless in practice, because every channel feels equally important and no startup has the resources to fund them all.
The question that actually matters is which channels disproportionately shape what AI tools say about legal tech companies. That answer is more specific than most agencies are willing to admit, and the specificity is what turns generic earned-media advice into an actionable strategy.
When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini answer a legal tech buyer’s question, the synthesis pulls from a recognizable, category-specific set of sources:
Vendor websites appear less often than vendors would like, and never in the absence of supporting third-party citations.
Most startups, when they invest in earned media at all, invest in the wrong places. They pay for press releases picked up by aggregators no AI tool weights. They sponsor podcasts whose audiences do not overlap with their buyers. They run guest-post campaigns on general business blogs with no relevance to legal tech.
None of this is bad in absolute terms — it is misallocated relative to AEO impact. A single placement in Legaltech News, or a sustained presence in the right Reddit threads, will move AI citation patterns more than ten generic placements elsewhere. The citation map tells you where the leverage is.
Reddit is both the highest-leverage citation source for legal tech and the channel most legal tech founders are least comfortable engaging with.
The legal subreddits are real communities with real norms, and they reject vendor self-promotion swiftly and permanently. They are also where AI tools draw a disproportionate share of their understanding of legal tech tools, because the threads contain unfiltered practitioner opinion aggregated over years.
A startup that wants AEO results from Reddit cannot post promotionally. It can participate substantively where its category is discussed, build relationships with active community members, answer questions about its category without pitching, and over time become a recognized voice that AI tools cite. None of this is fast. All of it is real.
The shape of the strategy matters more than its breadth.
